The mission of Cards4Good is to assist the West End of Louisville with healthy food access, air purification through plantings and green energy, plentiful clean water access to combat the diabetes epidemic and to provide Cardinal Athlete Alumni with a foundation and connections that promote a purpose-filled life.
The West End's designation as a "food desert" means fresh meats, fruits, and vegetables are hard to come by and family staples are often purchased at convenience or liquor stores rather than grocery stores due to a combination of factors working against the health of the population. When purchasing a sugar-filled soda is significantly easier than providing milk or high-quality water, it is no wonder the prevalence of diabetes in these zip codes has skyrocketed. Once a family member in the home enters a disease state, all tasks become more burdensome for each person living in the home. The situations are cyclical and we must do what we can to break the cycle.
There are many answers to this question. For professional athletes, C4G can serve as their charitable foundation and tax relief without creating an organization from scratch. Unlike years ago, professional athletes do not stay in the same city for an entire career. Thus, where to base an individual's foundation can become problematic. C4G will also promote all individual foundations already in existence, providing another venue for events, etc. C4G can be a one-stop shop to learn about all the great work already being done by grown-up Cardinal Athletes.
C4G will serve as a reconnection point for Alumni athletes that may feel displaced due to the many years away from campus or perhaps a new coaching staff in their sport, this will serve as a way to tether all Cardinals back to the city of Louisville. C4G will also serve as a resource for locating Alumni Cards in new cities. No matter where you end up, I'll bet we find a Cardinal there. And perhaps most importantly, C4G will provide an ever-present opportunity for service, either hands-on or virtually, it all makes the world a better place. No need for media attention, just plain service to help a fellow human and perhaps refuel the soul.
Cards4Good operates through donations to fund the united efforts of all Alumni Cardinal Athletes. To start, the Executive Director will coordinate infrastructure setup and West End works on a single Metro Land Bank lot. As resources grow, the goal is to secure an entire block in the West End with a multi-use facility, greenhouse, drawdown plantings, and many water bottle filling stations accessible to the public, 24/7. When we have reached the stage of a fully operational facility with more staff and programming, the documentation of the entire process will be shared with other universities that churn out large populations of athletes on a yearly basis.
Cards4Good has already started the groundwork with the UofL Entrepreneurial program to secure a business model patent. There is no other organization on the planet with this game plan. One major reason this foundation is a necessity, in addition to the community service provided by enrolled Student-Athletes, is the NCAA rule prohibiting University Student-Athletes from interacting with high school-aged (prospect-aged) individuals. That is exactly when such mentorship is needed the most! Those teens will become our focal point for services provided.
The next city to answer the call will have a far easier path since they will have Louisville as a reference to see what positive changes can come from this game plan. Let's show'em how it's done!
